Kane, Paul
Kane, Paul (b Mallow, Co. Cork, 3 Sept. 1810; d Toronto, 20 Feb. 1871).Irish-born Canadian painter of landscape and Indian subjects. He was active mainly in Toronto, but he journeyed as far as the Pacific coast, publishing an account of his travels and adventures in Wanderings of an Artist (1859). About half his paintings are portraits of Indians and he took great care over accurate recording of details of costume and ornament, giving his work much historical value. He also had considerable skill, however, in composing figure groups in a way akin to the European Grand Manner. His work is well represented in the National Gallery, Ottawa, and the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto.
