Kändler, Johann Joachim

Kändler, Johann Joachim (b Fischbach, 15 June 1706; d Meissen, 18 May 1775).
German sculptor and porcelain modeller. From 1733 until his death he was chief modeller at the Meissen factory near Dresden, which during this time was the arbiter of European taste in porcelain. Kändler's brilliance and inventiveness was a major factor in its success. He is widely regarded as the greatest of all porcelain modellers, and his work has great vivacity as well as a Rococo delicacy and charm. Examples of his large output are in many museums, notably the Porzellansammlung, Dresden.
