The Belvedere Palace (actually two distinct buildings, the Upper and Lower Belvedere) houses three museums that together make up the Österreichische Galerie and collectively form a national gallery of Austrian art. They are devoted respectively to medieval art up to the 16th century, to 17th- and 18th-century art (the Barockmuseum), and to 19th- and 20th-century art. Most of the leading Austrian painters and sculptors are well represented in these collections.

Next to the Musées Royaux in Brussels, this is Belgium's most important museum, and it is likewise primarily a collection of Old Master paintings (although it also has modern works). It is particularly strong in Netherlandish, Flemish, Dutch, and Belgian art (a group of Rubens altarpieces is one of the highlights), but it also has good examples from other schools, notably the French, German, and Italian.

A fairly small but highly impressive collection of paintings, almost all from the Low Countries, from the 15th century to the 20th century. Among them are two of the most famous masterpieces of the Early Netherlandish School: Jan van Eyck's Madonna of Canon van der Paele and Hugo van der Goes's Death of the Virgin.

Belgium's leading art museum—mainly devoted to Old Master paintings, although it also has significant holdings of sculpture. Denmark's pre-eminent picture collection. Apart from the incomparable representation of Danish art (with Eckersberg, Juel, and Købke to the fore), it is notable chiefly for its large collection of 17th-century Dutch painting, but it also has fine works from other schools: Cranach and Matisse, for example, are well represented. The museum is perhaps best known as the home of one of the greatest of all illuminated manuscripts, the Très Riches Heures du duc de Berry by the Limbourg brothers. However, it also has many other treasures, including impressive collections of Old Master paintings and drawings. The French and Italian paintings are particularly noteworthy, Ingres, Poussin, Raphael, Rosa, and Watteau being among the artists best represented.

One of France's leading provincial collections. Its treasures include two celebrated works from the golden age of art in Burgundy, when Dijon was the capital of Duke Philip the Bold: Claus Sluter's tomb of Philip, and an altarpiece carved by Jacques de Baerze and painted by Melchior Broederlam.

Outside Paris, the museum has the largest and most comprehensive collection of Old Master paintings in France. Lille is very near the border with Belgium and for a time was part of the Netherlands, so it is not surprising that it is particularly strong in Dutch and Flemish, as well as French, art. The museum also has an important collection of drawings, many of them bequeathed by the painter Jean-Baptiste Wicar, a native of Lille.

A large collection devoted mainly to French art of the 17th to the 19th century. The museum has a choice collection of Old Master and 19th-century paintings, particularly of the French, Dutch, and Italian schools, as well as some modern works. The museum is named after a medieval Augustinian monastery, parts of which are incorporated into the building, and appropriately it has an outstanding collection of medieval (particularly Romanesque) sculpture. The palace retains much of its original decorative painting by Charles Le Brun and his followers and has also accumulated a vast number of portraits and numerous history paintings, especially ones celebrating French military triumphs. In addition to the frescos by Fra Angelico for which the convent of S. Marco is famous, the museum has a superb collection of his panel paintings, including major altarpieces. The Capitoline Museums are made up of three museums occupying two buildings (designed by Michelangelo) that face each other across the Piazza del Campidoglio. The Museo Capitolino and the Museo dei Conservatori house antiquities, including some of the most famous works of classical statuary, most notably the Marcus Aurelius equestrian statue, which formerly stood in the piazza. The third museum, the Pinacoteca Capitolina, is somewhat overshadowed by its neighbours, but it contains a good collection of pictures, mainly Italian works of the 16th and 17th centuries.

This museum can claim to have the most comprehensive collection of paintings in the Netherlands, for although the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam is bigger and has more major works, its coverage does not generally extend beyond the 19th century, whereas modern art is well represented here, alongside Old Master paintings. A major provincial collection, with holdings ranging from Egyptian and Greek antiquities to contemporary art. It is chiefly renowned for its impressive representation of 19th-century British paintings, including some of the most famous works of the Pre-Raphaelites, such as Ford Madox Brown's Work and Millais's Autumn Leaves. However, it has riches in many other areas, including paintings from all the major European schools. A large and diverse collection, with major holdings of paintings, sculptures, drawings, and prints. The collection of Italian painting is one of the largest and most varied in the USA, and the American and French schools are also particularly well represented. Harvard University administers two other museums: the Busch-Reisinger Museum, which is devoted mainly to art of the German-speaking countries, especially of the 20th century; and the Arthur M. The collections are extensive and varied, including a good deal of oriental art and applied art. However, the Art Institute is principally famous for Western paintings—outside New York and Washington, it has arguably the finest collection in the USA. There are superb examples from every major school and its celebrated masterpieces include Seurat's Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, Grant Wood's American Gothic, and Hopper's Nighthawks.

A large and wide-ranging collection that includes one of the most comprehensive and well-balanced representations of Western painting in the USA. Its most famous exhibits include one of the two versions of Ruisdael's Jewish Cemetery (the other is in the Gemäldegalerie, Dresden) and Whistler's Nocturne in Black and Gold: The Falling Rocket, the picture that sparked off his libel trial with Ruskin. There are also murals by Diego Rivera, specially painted for the building.
