Inchbold, J. W.
Inchbold, J. W. (John William Inchbold) (b Leeds, 29 Aug. 1830; d Leeds, 23 Jan. 1888).English painter. In the 1850s he was friendly with the Pre-Raphaelites and with Ruskin (with whom he visited Switzerland in 1858) and at this time he painted some outstanding Pre-Raphaelite landscapes, with meticulous detail (In Early Spring, 1855, Ashmolean Mus., Oxford). Later his style became broader. Inchbold had a difficult temperament and never enjoyed much success. He travelled a good deal and lived in Switzerland for most of the final decade of his life.
