Hanneman, Adriaen

Hanneman, Adriaen (b The Hague, c.1604; bur. The Hague, 11 July 1671).
Dutch portrait painter. He studied under Anthonie van Ravesteyn, then from about 1626 to 1638 he lived in England, where he perhaps worked as an assistant to van Dyck for a time. On his return to the Netherlands he became one of the leading portraitists in The Hague, his sitters including many English Royalists who had gone into exile after the Civil War as well as officials of the Dutch government. His style—elegant and dignified, although sometimes a little stiff—was strongly influenced by van Dyck. In spite of his success Hanneman had financial problems late in his career (for unknown reasons).
