Hall, Peter Adolf

Hall, Peter Adolf (b Borås, 23 Feb. 1739; d Liège, 15 May 1793).
Swedish portrait painter, active mainly in Paris, where he moved in 1766. He was most renowned as a miniaturist, but he also made life-size portraits in oils and pastels (his miniatures are very lively in technique, with broader brushwork than is usually found in the medium). Hall quickly became a fashionable success in Paris, but his market was ruined by the Revolution, and he left France destitute in 1791, moving to Brussels and then Liège. His work is well represented in the Nationalmuseum, Stockholm, and there are examples in the Wallace Collection, London.
