Hackaert, Jan

Hackaert, Jan (bapt. Amsterdam, Feb. 1628; d Amsterdam, c.1685).
Dutch landscape painter, active mainly in Amsterdam. Most of his work consists of Italianate landscapes and woodland scenes. He travelled in Switzerland in the 1650s, but there is no documentary evidence that he visited Italy; however, he captured the golden Italian sunlight so successfully that his Lake of Zurich (c.1673, Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam) was long thought to be a view of Lake Trasimene in Umbria. The figures in his paintings are often the work of other artists, notably Berchem and Adriaen van de Velde.
