Gierymski, Alexander
Gierymski, Alexander (b Warsaw, 30 Jan. 1850; d Rome, 6/8 Mar. 1901).Polish painter. He had an unstable temperament, led a wandering life, often in poverty, and at the time of his death (in an asylum) was virtually unknown to the art world. However, he is now considered one of the greatest of Polish painters. His work, which includes landscapes, genre scenes, and urban views, is remarkable for its subtle handling of light, particularly in his nocturnes (The Louvre at Night, 1892, Nat. Mus., Poznań). His brother Maximilian Gierymski (1846–74), a painter and illustrator, died young of lung disease.
