Dalwood, Hubert

Dalwood, Hubert (b Bristol, 2 June 1924; d London, 2 Nov. 1976).
British abstract sculptor. He was one of the leading figures of the generation that broke away from the raw, expressive manner in wrought and welded metal that was so prominent in British sculpture in the 1950s (his own earliest work was in this vein). His favourite medium was aluminium, which he sometimes painted. With this he created volumetric objects that contrast ribbed and edged forms with smoother and more fluid areas (Large Object, 1959, Tate, London). He also made sensitively modelled reliefs in aluminium. In the late 1960s, following a stay in the USA, he turned to bigger, shiny, columnar forms. In the 1970s he began making large room installations in wood.
