Dalmau, Luis

Dalmau, Luis (active 1428–61).
Spanish painter, first recorded in 1428 in Valencia, where he worked for Alfonso V of Aragon. In 1431 Alfonso sent him to Bruges to study tapestry weaving. After his return to Spain he settled in Barcelona, and his most important work, the Virgin of the Councillors (1445, Barcelona Mus.), was painted for the town hall there. Dalmau's visit to Flanders is the first recorded contact of a Spanish painter with the Netherlandish School, and this painting is very strongly influenced by Jan van Eyck.
