    First to say, I LOVE THIS BOOK. They couldn't live without Johnny because Johnny was basically their brother. As you should know Johnny doesn't have a good life at home so he turns to his gang as family. It is like losing oneofyour sibling, it would be terrible. Johnny holds the group together, and without him the group is just not normal. Also it was more of Dally who couldn't live without Johnny. Does this help?
