Posted by boryung on Wednesday June 10, 2009 at 7:36 PMWhen Johnny and Ponyboy run away from home to escape the law, they end up at an abandoned church on a hill. During their stay, Johnny buys the novel Gone with the Wind to help pass the time. Bored and lonely, the two boys spend most of their time either playing poker or reading the novel outloud.
Gone with the Wind contributes to the novel in ways other than giving the boys something to do during their stay at the church. Johnny expresses his admiration of the Southern gentleman, fighting for a bad cause but fighting for it until the end. Johnny relates the Southern gentleman with Dally, admiring their nobility and loyalty. Rhett Butler in Gone with the Wind and the other Confederate soldiers are representative of the greasers. Both are not fighting for the most noble causes; soldiers of the Confederacy fought for the preservation of slavery, and greasers often fight the law. Society tends to misunderstand and critically judge both. Both the Confederate soldier and the greaser, however, were loyal to their family or friends, and did not cease in the fight to protect the people that were precious to them. Johnny and Ponyboy's admiration of the Confederate soldiers helps the readers understand more about the greasers and their values.
