    This novel takes place in the 1950's in Oklahoma, which is where S.E. Hinton grew up.  She wrote this when she was 16 and modelled it after her own experiences as a teenager.

    Another reader answered that The Outsiders took place in the 1950's.  That is a common misconception, but still incorrect.  The Socs have "madras and Mustangs and Corvairs."  Corvairs were produced from 1959 to 1969, and the Mustang wasn't introduced until 1964.   Madras shirts and jackets were a popular fashion in the 1960s.  The Beatles (which Cherry and Marcia preferred over Elvis) didn't become a group until 1960, and didn't come to the U.S. until 1964. (I remember their appearance on Ed Sullivan!)
