After having a fight with Darry, Ponyboy runs away and meets Johnyy in the park. Ponyboy and Johnny are accosted in the park by a pack of drunken socs. The two groups exchange insults, Ponyboy spits on one of them, and one of them grabs Ponyboy by the neck. While Ponyboy is being drowned, he blacks out, and when he comes to, Johnny has killed Bob. The boys panic, and run to Dally for advice, and he gives them money and a gun. He also tells them about a place where they can hide out until he comes to get them. When they get to Windrixville, the boys go to the church and collapse into an exhausted sleep.
