If Darry didn't have Soda and Pony, why would he be a social?

He gave up a football scholarship that would have taken him through college to keep his brothers together, and he takes his role as their guardian very seriously. Ponyboy chafes under Darry's tight-reined control, not realizing that when Darry accuses him of not using his head, what he's really saying is that he cares about Pony and doesn't want anything to happen to him. Darry is the leader of the greasers, despite his clean-shaven, clean-cut Soc-like appearance. He likes fighting with the Socs for the athletic challenge, and he's very intelligent.
