The Story:
Upon his return to England to marry Bella Wilfer in compliance
with the conditions of his father’s will, John Harmon was
thought to have been murdered soon after having left the ship; a
body found by Gaffer Hexam was identified as his. Actually, Harmon
had not died; fearing for his life and shrinking from the enforced
marriage, he assumed the name first of Julius Handford, then of
John Rokesmith.
As Rokesmith, Harmon became a secretary to Mr. Boffin, who had
inherited the estate of Harmon’s father after young John
