Lodovico's role, although small, is important to show the change in Othello from the beginning of the play and his transformation to the end of the book.  Lodovico knew Othello in Venice and has been removed from all the action that has been going on.  So when he arrives in Cyprus and sees the new and not-so-improved Othello, he is completely shocked.
