It is easy for a contemporary reader or viewer of "Othello" to see Othello himself as brave. After all, he is a warrior, and ready to fight. He is also a man facing racial prejudice and keeping his cool—and ready to risk that position for the woman he loves. All those are easy to see as courage. However, one character my attitudes allow me to see as brave is Emilia. Iago is a slick and dominant husband—a villain indeed. For her to stand up to him at the end and insist on making sure the truth about Desdemona gets out is quite brave—like a battered wife standing up for herself.
