Iago is a very manipulative man and  disguises his true nature by pretending to be a friend to Othello. Iago is the most evil character of all of Shakespeare. In today's language we would call him a sociopath. No other character can even come close to his evil. Unlike Shakespeare's other bad character's Iago has no actual reason to hate.

If it weren't for Iago Othello would have married Desdimonia. All of the suffering he causes are due to his lies and manipulation. In each act, there is an evil plot mastermined by Iago. In act 1 Iago shows his intense hatred for Othello for making Cassio lieutenant. Jealousy is why. All throut the play his evil permeates. There is no real answer to what made him evil. I think Shakespeare chose Iago to represent evil because he has no reason. That is just what he is.
