Posted by rshaffer on Wednesday February 11, 2009 at 12:34 PMWhen Othello publicly scolds Cassio and strips of his rank, Iago is there to "pick up the pieces." Cassio wants to regain favor with Othello, and Iago comes up with the plan to do it. He tells Cassio to go to Desdemona and plead with her to speak on his behalf to Othello. The irony is that Cassio is playing right into Iago's hands. He has no idea that when Desdemona begs Othello for the reinstatement of his position, that Iago is going to use this to further advance his plan of revenge on Othello. Iago questions Cassio's and Desdemona's relationship, planting a seed in Othello's mind that Cassio and Desdemon are in love and having an affair. Iago's cunning use of Othello's jealous nature, is the impetus for his plan's success.
