Mr. Nuttel is visiting the Sappleton house because his sister provided him letters of introduction to the family: “My sister was staying here, at the rectory, you know, some four years ago, and she gave me letters of introduction to some of the people here.”
Mr. Nuttle is resting in the countryside to help cure his nerves. His sister must have wanted him not to stay alone all the time, so she gave him the letters of introduction for Mrs. Sappleton so he would have someone to visit.
