Interesting question, but a little vague, I have to say. I think, the open window in Saki's short story of the same name is a brilliant metaphor for the mind, the process of thinking and the stories that are churned out of the mental space. The openness of the window might also be seen as a symbol of life's openness or the ambivalence so as to the distinction of fiction and reality that remains at the end of the story. In this way, it also operates as a symbol of Saki's text.

The open window reflects the character of both Nuttel and Vera. It is a space that brings back Nuttel's neurotic anxiety and his mental inclination towards the macabre. On the other hand, the open window is an object in reality that kindles Vera's story. It is a real object that is tapped into fiction by Vera and it starts to stand for the creative process of her mind working like another open window, constructing an evocative fiction about a non-existent reality.
