Santiago of "The Old Man and the Sea," is an aging Cuban fisherman now reduced to poverty as he lives alone.  He has lost his fisherman's "luck," having gone eighty-four days without catching a fish.  The boy who loves him has even gone to work on another boat.  Nevertheless, Santiago is positi and remains hopeful each day when he takes his skiff into the Gulf Stream in search of marlin.
