Ernest Hemingway's classic, "The Old Man and the Sea" is the story of one man's ability to persevere despite his aloneness in the harsh circumstance of poverty and aloneness. He faces what life has set before him and accepts the challenge to go forth each day and fish. Once he has caught the marlin, he fights sharks who devour his catch in a significant three days. Indeed, "the best fisherman" is the old man, for he endures, and the words of the boy, Manolin, suggest this courage. Santiago faces all that Nature deals him and survives, returning home with only the skeleton of the marlin, but with positive intention of going out the next day. Hungry, alone, and poor, Santiago is yet a man, the best of fishermen.
