The Story:
Late one hot afternoon, two men carrying blanket rolls trudged down the path that led to the bank of the Salinas River. One man—his companion called him George—was small and wiry. The other was a large, lumbering fellow whose arms hung loosely at his sides. After they had drunk at the sluggish water and washed their faces, George sat back with his legs drawn up.
