Posted by gbeatty on Wednesday April 16, 2008 at 5:33 PMLove is painful, tragic, and complicated in Steinbeck's classic novel, and there is a lack of normal and loving relationships in many ways. To expand on that a bit, there is no doubt that the men in this novel love, and intensely. Lenny and George love one another, but George must kill Lenny because Lenny's desire for closeness is not matched by control of his strength. Candy loves his dog, but must kill it, due to pressure from the men. Several of the men love the land, or their work, but they are kept from it by the social structure.
As for the love between men and women, it is distorted by fear, ego, and power dynamics. Curley's so hot to keep men away from his life it causes lots of trouble, and his wife is so hot to be admired that she too causes trouble.
