    George and Lennie's situation represents what many Americans were experiencing at that time: extreme poverty and the need to travel long and far to find work. Many people became migrant workers, going from one place or farm to another in search of work and, thus, money to sustain their lives and family. George and Lennie also demonstrate the condition of the American spirit in that they are still hopeful and looking forward to a better future; they dream of owning their own farm one day where they can raise rabbits. This shows the hopefulness and determination of the American spirit, not allowing bad present situations bring them down. THough the economic condition of the country was affecting themin the present and kept them working hard to earn a respectable wage to live on, their dreams and hopes could not be shattered and the continued on working to improve their own situation.
