The dead mouse Lennie carries in his pocket and continues to pet until George makes him give it up suggests several thematic parallels. In some ways, Lennie is like the mouse itself: defenseless and of no importance or value to most people. However, Lennie loves the mouse and tries to take care of it, just as George loves Lennie and tries to take care of him. Lennie's relationship with the mouse also foreshadows events to come. Although he means no harm, he accidentally kills it, as he will accidentally kill the pup and, eventually, Curley's wife.
