One of the aspects of foreshadowing is the scene with the puppy. Lennie really wants something to love and by giving him a puppy George hopes that because it is bigger than a mouse it will give him the opportunity he has always wanted. However, it is forshadowing when he kills the puppy because it shows us that no matter how large the animal, when Lennie gets excited or angry he cannot, due to his mental ability, control his strength.  Therefore, we are able to see this in action when Lennie is talking with Curly's wife in the barn.  Again, he gets so caught up in the moment that he cannot control his own strength.  Lennie therefore will not be able to in life to have something soft to love.
