My teacher always tells our class to achieve the top A/A* grade you need to be original and have lots of different interpretations.

I thought it would be good if this discussion was used to help identify all the little symoblisms and hidden information in of mice and men since it's jam-packed with little messages and symbolisms and lots of original points.

I'll start; for example: in the description of chapter 5 it mentions the buzz of flies - this could represent the ranch workers since there are plenty of flies around just like ranch workers and it shows their movement (they're constantly changing work and home) plus they are annoying to higher society.

Thanks and hope it helps people

blair-enchanted,

What if the flies are just flies?  In any interpretation of a work, can it have an infinite number of interpretations? I think not, because if something means anything to anyone, then I don't see how it can mean anything to anyone. It would almost defeat the purpose of writing anything with a purpose, if that purpose can be misconstrued and misinterpreted as anything. I would suggest that a story can have several possible themes--a theme being the ultimate truth of a literary wok expressed as a statement.
