The critical reception of Of Mice and Men was the most positive that had greeted any of Steinbeck's works up to that time. The novel was chosen as a Book of the Month Club selection before it was published, and 117,000 copies were sold in advance of the official publication date of February 25,1937. In early April, the book appeared on best-seller lists across the country and continued to be among the top ten best-sellers throughout the year.
