According to the message which Oedipus's envoy, Creon brings back from Apollo's oracle, the city of Thebeswhich has been suffering under pestilence will be saved if the murderer of the earlier King Laius, is caught and banished from the city. This is of course supreme irony as all unwittingly Oedipus is the killer and his headstrong determination to find the culprit is the key aspect in the swift reversal of his fortunes as well as the basic reason for the play's tragic nature. The prevalent Greek idea that wile murder was bad enough, regicide was equal toblasphemy and sacrilege, therefore incurring defilement is clearly indicated here.
