Oedipus' life was predetermined by the Gods, like human beings. At the time of oedipus' birth it was prophesied that he would kill his father and would marry his mother. In order to avoid such a dreadful situation, the baby was taken out of the kingdom and was ordered to be killed. But a kind shepherd took pity on the baby and was left to die near the Cithaeron mountains .But fate takes the baby to a childless royal couple and the baby lives there to become a young man. When learned of his strange destiny ,Oedipus leaves his kingdom ands ets on a journey. The circle comes to an end when oedipus on the way kills his father without knowing who he was, answers the sphinx and becomes the king of his native land ,marries his mother without knowing who she really was and bears children too. Oedipus does everthing in his power to ward of his illfate but fails.Once he learns the truth it was too much for him and he blinds himself and leaves the place. The story is meant to bring out pity and fear in us and to mend our ways. That's why Sophocles is called a master tragedian till now.
