How is Oedipus not average?

Specific exampes I need explained are the prophecy given to his parents, events of birth and near death experience, his fatal encounter with his biological father.

    Oedipus's parents were told that he was going to kill his father, so they hired a man to nail his feet to a hill outside of the city so that he would die.  However, a shepherd found the baby Oedipus nailed to the hill and saved him.  The shepherd took him to another King and Queen who then adopted him and raised him as their own.

    When Oedipus is a young man, he meets his biological father at a crossroads.  In those days, the "lesser" person was to move to the side and allow the "upper" person to pass.  Niether man would move to the side for this stanger.  Niether knew who the other was, so they ended up getting in a fight.  Oedipus killed his biological father in this fight.
