In Chapter V, Ino, who is a sea goddess, is the one who provides Odysseus with a magic veil (some translations say scarf or cloak) that will keep him afloat when his raft disintegrates in the storm that Poseidon sends. At first Odysseus is reluctant to trust Ino because his dealings with deities have not always worked out well. Remember that Calypso kept him captive on her island for seven years. But he must trust Ino or drown, for he can see no land at this point. In fact, it's another three days before he spies the island of Scheria where he will meet Nausicaa, the daughter of Alcinous, who is king. Once he reaches land, he must throw away the "immortal" scarf "into the wine-dark sea." The Phaeacians on this island will be the people who eventually take Odysseus back to Ithaca.
