When the suitors learn that Telemachus has sailed from Ithaca to Pylos without their knowledge, they are dumbfounded at his cleverness. Sensing that the prince now poses more of a threat than they had imagined, Antinous plots to kill Telemachus. The leader of the suitors plans to take 20 men and ambush him in the straits between Ithaca and Same on his return home.

Medon, the crier, now informs Penelope of her son's journey and of the ambush plotted by the suitors, and she is terrified they may succeed. At the book's end, the suitors are anchored in the straits awaiting Telemachus' arrival while Athena has created phantom of Penelope's sister who visits to assure that the gods will protect Telemachus.
