Penelope has challenged the suitors-whoever strings the bow is who she will marry. Eurymachus attempts and fails, as does Telemachus. Odysseus (disguised) announces that he will try, while he also states that he has had too much to drink. Odysseus is successful in string the bow, and is also now in the position of having a weapon in his hand to fight the suitors in the next book.
