The main point: the desire to get home and the difficulty in getting there. See the eNotes study guide for help with themes. Posted by linda-allen on Mar 18, 2009. |

The main theme is that people must overcome their own human nature to achieve their goals. Odysseus's pride gets in his way several times as he tries to obtain passage home. He has several chances, but his pride keeps him from seeing Ithaca. His men's curiosity causes them to open the bags holding the winds that kept him from home. His own pride cause the Cyclops to curse his name. Even his lust causes him to lose precious years with Calypso that he could have spent with Penelope. One must overcome the shortcomings of man to truly achieve peace and the deserved awards. Posted by mayres14 on Mar 23, 2009. |
