Mirabell is in love with Mrs Millamant, but has incurred the displeasure of her aunt Lady Wishfort, because he insincerely paid court to her only to distract from his love for her niece. Fainall, though married to Lady Wishfort's daughter, is in love with Mrs Marwood. Lady Wishfort wants Millamant to marry her nephew Sir Wilfull Witwoud, to keep her fortune in the family. Fainall, in league with Marwood, is hoping that Mirabell will marry Millamant, so that Lady Wishfort disinherits her, and Fainall will gain the fortune through his wife. After...
