Jaffier has a grudge against Priuli, a Venetian senator. Jaffier, after saving the life of Priuli's daughter Belvidera, has secretly married her, but Priuli refuses to offer him financial support. Jaffier's friend Pierre, who also has a personal grudge, persuades Jaffier to join a conspiracy against the Senate. When Jaffier learns that the conspirators intend to slaughter all the senators and their families, he hurries with Belvidera to the Senate, where he betrays his fellow conspirators on condition that their lives are spared.
