Three families are beginning their day in Sarsaparilla: business executive Clive Pogson and his fastidious wife Girlie, with their daughter Judy, a keen violinist, and their second precocious daughter Pippy; Harry Knott, trading in men's wear, and his pregnant wife Mavis, with her brother Roy, a teacher with pretensions to becoming a writer; and the Boyles, which the others look down on, because Nola is jolly and blowsy, and her husband Ernie is a sanitary man. Judy and Roy, who are close, suffer from the philistinism of their families. Housework is carried out, and the day passes....
