Eighty-four-year-old Charlotte has come on holiday with her daughter Enid, a retired draper's shop owner in her sixties. They are visiting the grave of Charlotte's husband Benjamin (Ben), who was killed at Salonika in the First World War. While they settle to enjoy the sun, gently bickering with each other, Ben rises from the sand and speaks first to Charlotte then to his daughter, who dances for him. Charlotte's friend Leonard unexpectedly arrives, because he is missing her. To Enid's dismay, Leonard and Charlotte decide to get married. On the same beach is a young Englishman Peter, who spends his time sunning himself and sleeping with tourists,...
