Eventually Christy confesses that he is on the run from the police because he has murdered his father. He becomes the centre of attention, and Michael James offers him a job as potboy, since he is clearly a brave young fellow. Pegeen becomes attracted to the stranger and repels the advances of Shawn's cousin the Widow...
