The Stage Manager introduces the small township of Grover's Corners in 1901, in particular Dr Gibbs, the town doctor, and his family, and Mr Webb, editor of the local newspaper, and his wife and children. Professor Willard and Mr Webb provide more information about the town and answer questions from the audience. After an insight into daily life, we move forward four years, when Dr Gibbs's son George and Mr Webb's daughter Emily are getting married. We then arrive in 1913, and Emily has died in childbirth. She joins the dead in the cemetery, but asks to revisit the living. She comes back to her home in...
