Iago, who is angry that Cassio has been promoted above him, determines to destroy his general, the Moor Othello. First, he incites Rodrigo to denounce Othello for having stolen away Desdemona. But Othello reveals before the Venetian Senate how honourable his love for Desdemona is and that they have married in secret. Othello is now charged with defending Cyprus from a Turkish invasion, and sets sail at once.
