Oscar Madison is a sports writer, an easygoing slovenly divorcee, who is having problems with his ex-wife over alimony payments, and who regularly hosts poker games in his apartment. Felix Ungar is late for the game, and when he eventually arrives, is distraught because his wife has thrown him out. Oscar offers to share his apartment with Felix – an arrangement that is less than satisfactory, because, although Felix cooks and cleans, his obsessive tidiness gets on Oscar's nerves. When they invite Gwendoline and Cecily Pigeon, two Englishwomen from the apartment above, to dinner, Oscar arrives late, and the sisters are annoyingly attracted...
