The dashing John Karslake and his pretty wife Cynthia are imbued with the ‘New York idea’ that marriage and divorce are matters not to be taken too seriously. Consequently, they have become divorced and now seek new partners. Cynthia becomes engaged to a pompous, conservative judge Philip Phillimore, while Karslake starts to develop an interest in the judge's divorced wife Vida, who is something of a maneater. Just before her wedding, however, Cynthia has second thoughts about marrying the boring judge. She fears that Karslake may marry Vida and rushes off to see him.
