Ann and Tom Herford are both sculptors, who have been married for 17 years. Separately, they enter a competition for a frieze design, and despite Tom regarding himself as the better artist, Ann wins the $100,000 prize, while Tom comes second. At first, Tom seems delighted at his wife's success but soon begins to question aggressively how she will be able to attend to her household duties if she is to fulfil this commission.
