Caesar has defeated Pompey. Cato, dismayed by Caesar's tyranny, is isolated in the Phoenician town of Utica with a remnant of the Roman Senate. Juba, the Prince of the neighbouring Numidia, loves Cato's daughter Marcia and supports Cato. A treacherous Roman senator, Sempronius, also in love with Marcia, plans to betray the city to Caesar and claim Marcia as his prize. When offers of friendship come from Caesar, Cato rejects the hand of a tyrant and also refuses to flee to the comparative safety of Numidia. When Sempronius' mutiny fails, he plans to disguise himself as Juba, seize Marcia, and fly to Caesar. Juba...
