Aimwell and Archer are gentlemen who have fallen on hard times and so decide to leave London and seek their fortunes in the country, travelling as a lord and his servant. They arrive at the inn of Boniface, who assumes that they are thieves and so plans to rob them. The two friends soon seek out a local heiress Dorinda, daughter to the munificent Lady Bountiful and sister-in-law to the frustrated Mrs Sullen. By pretending to fall ill, Aimwell gains access to the charitable Lady Bountiful and so meets Dorinda, while Archer woos Mrs Sullen.
